Welcome to The World According to Rob. This site will eventually contain all of the jazz writing I’ve done in the last five years. I started writing out of necessity — because I wasn’t seeing the kind of music and musicians that really grab me getting much attention. I’m trying to change that. It’ll be pretty obvious when it’s all up that I have diverse tastes in music — I lean towards the so-called avant-garde, but I’m still fascinated by Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus. I think that great music is great music, period. So I don’t think it’s weird to be equally into Roscoe Mitchell and Joni Mitchell; Keith Jarrett and Hank Jones and Cecil Taylor. Woody Shaw and Clifford Brown are on par with Lester Bowie, Don Cherry and Kenny Wheeler. I love them all, and I respect the music and those who create it.
